THE SCIENCE BEHIND OUR ANTI-AGEING SUPPLEMENTS

We can’t stop time, but we can live better for longer.

As nutrition scientists, we’re strong advocates for a ‘food-first’ approach, but we also believe we can do more. And there’s clear evidence that some biomarkers of ageing respond well to an extra boost of certain supplements.

That’s why we formulated our Premium Vitality Capsules and Premium Greens the way we did.

Each of our ingredients has been chosen for its ability to deliver specific, scientifically validated support. And crucially, our product formulation process ensures that the active ingredient in question is present in a well-researched dose.

For those of you who are interested in more of a deep dive – let’s look at some of the scientific headlines behind some of our ingredients.

What do anti-ageing supplements do?

Anti-ageing supplements can work in multiple ways, but CAMINO’s work by combining clinically studied ingredients that support cellular health. By targeting mitochondrial function, NAD+ metabolism, and antioxidant pathways, our supplements are designed to help the body maintain resilience as it ages, inside and out.

How do anti-ageing supplements slow down ageing?

At a simple level, we age because our cells age.

Our mission is to slow that process down so that we can all live better for longer.

In 2013, researchers published an article called The Hallmarks of Aging (authored by Carlos López-Otín, Maria A. Blasco, Linda Partridge, Manuel Serrano, Guido Kroemer, published in Cell). It introduced a framework to describe the key biological mechanisms that determine our bodies' natural ageing processes. This has since been expanded upon by the same group (available to read in Science Direct) and recognises 12 distinct ‘hallmarks’ of ageing, including:

  • Telomere attrition
  • Epigenetic alterations
  • Mitochondrial dysfunction
  • Cellular senescence
  • Altered intercellular communication
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Dysbiosis
  • Loss of proteostasis

By understanding these signs, we’ve gained a greater insight into how to slow biological ageing.

How do CAMINO’s supplements slow biological ageing?

Our formulas focus on supporting the eight hallmarks of ageing listed above. We target these through optimising:

  • Antioxidant pathways – helping to neutralise free radicals to reduce oxidative stress, a key driver of cellular ageing.
  • Mitochondrial function – supporting the “powerhouses” of the cell to maintain energy production and metabolic efficiency.
  • Supporting epigenetic ageing – promoting healthy gene expression patterns that influence how cells age over time.

The focus is on supporting vitality and healthspan - but the skin can benefit too! When cells stay healthy for longer, age related changes are delayed - which means that rapidly regenerating cells like skin cells will also benefit. Supporting bouncier, firmer and more resilient skin after two to three months of use.

What ingredients are used in the anti-ageing supplements?

Just standout, scientifically researched ingredients, in studied, effective doses. No fillers. Just purposeful ingredients.

Why we use MonaJuventa™️Nu

MonaJuventa™️Nu is the hero ingredient in our Premium Vitality Capsules. Our capsules are some of the first in the world to use this next-generation active ingredient.

It’s been proven to slow down key ageing processes and tackle eight of the hallmarks of ageing: (source, Mibelle Group Biochemistry, the manufacturer behind the ingredient).

A recently published double blind placebo-controlled clinical trial – the gold standard of clinical trials – showed that daily supplementation with 100mg MonaJuventa Nu turns back the ageing clock in several ways, which we explore briefly below.

1. It protects telomeres

Telomeres are protective caps at the ends of your chromosomes that shorten with every cell division. Shorter telomeres mean a biologically ‘older’ acting cell.

MonaJuventa Nu™️ has been proven to slow telomere shortening (see graph). This means cells stay healthy for longer, have improved regenerative capacity and age-related changes are delayed.

Clinical trials of a ‘stressed’ population (those facing extra challenges, like obesity, diabetes, or chronic daily stress) showed that 80 days of MonaJuventa™️Nu supplementation significantly reduced telomere shortening rate for powerful cellular protection.

2. It protects your mitochondria

Mitochondria are tiny structures that live inside your cells. They are often referred to as cellular ‘energy factories’.

When you’re young, your mitochondria control cellular free radical damage by producing antioxidants (free radicals sound like a political party! But in fact they are unstable molecules that can damage DNA, proteins, and cell membranes if not balanced by antioxidants).

But as we age, our antioxidant (antioxidants are protective molecules that neutralise free radicals, helping to reduce oxidative stress and support healthy ageing) levels naturally decline, leaving our mitochondria overwhelmed and our cells vulnerable to age-related changes.

Studies show that MonaJuventa™️Nu protects your mitochondria to counteract cell ageing by shielding them from oxidative damage and supporting mitochondrial function.

3. It reduces your epigenetic age

Epigenetic age reflects how you are ageing at a cellular level. The graph below shows that clinical trial subjects showed significant reductions in epigenetic age after 80 days of regular MonaJuventa™️Nu supplementation.

Those 80 days of MonaJuventa™️Nu supplementation also showed improvements to:

  • ATP production (energy)
  • Cellular inflammation
  • Oxidative stress
  • Blood vessel integrity
  • Sleep quality

Full details of the clinical trial are covered in the 2025 article, ‘Unveiling the geroprotective potential of Monarda didyma L.: insights from in vitro studies and a randomized clinical trial on slowing biological aging and improving quality of life’, published on Springer Nature Link.

Why we use nicotinamide riboside (NR)

First, we need to understand something called NAD+ – or to give it its full name, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. But we prefer NAD+.

NAD+ plays a vital role in many of the processes in our bodies. Most notably, it helps create cellular energy and support cellular repair throughout trillions of cells throughout your body.

Your NAD+ levels decline with age as well as in response to stressors such as alcohol consumption, illness, intense exercise, and lack of sleep.

That’s where nicotinamide riboside (NR) comes in.

Research showed that NR can increase NAD+ levels by up to 150% to effectively boost cellular energy, support cellular repair and help us withstand the stressors of daily life.

It should be a key consideration in any longevity regime, and pairing it with MonaJuventa™️Nu, and Coenzyme Q10 creates what we believe to be an unbeatable longevity formula for cellular protection, improved vitality, cognition and health span.

Why we use NAC (N-acetylcysteine)

N-acetylcysteine (NAC)is the hero ingredient in our Premium Greens .

NAC promotes an extraordinary number of beneficial effects to just about every system of the body. These benefits stem from NAC’s role as a precursor (precursor = a building block the body uses to make something else - in this case, glutathione) to the body’s ‘master’ antioxidant, glutathione, and from its direct role as an antioxidant itself.

Through this antioxidant action, NAC can protect cells from oxidative stress (oxidative stress happens when free radicals build up faster than the body’s antioxidants can neutralise them, leading to potential damage to cells and tissues) helping cells stay ‘younger’ for longer – resulting in increased vitality and neuro (brain) support.

In fact, NAC is such a powerful antioxidant, that it is used in a clinical setting.

For example, due to its powerful antioxidant action on preventing cellular damage from environmental toxins, it is often used in hospitals as a first-line treatment for paracetamol (acetaminophen) overdose to prevent or reduce liver or kidney damage.

NAC can have specific benefits for brain health, too, due to its ability to regulate an important neurotransmitter called glutamate. This action of NAC has been shown in clinical trials to have significant beneficial effects on mental health conditions, particularly as an adjunct to medication.

The list of potential benefits for NAC supplementation are impressive, with studies showing that it can support:

  • Heart health
  • Fertility
  • Skin quality
  • Immune function
  • Respiratory function

You can see why we were so keen to put it into our Premium Greens formula.

During times of extra stress – for example, heavier than usual alcohol consumption, life disruptions such as moving house, moving jobs, during an illness – you can double your dose of our anti-ageing Premium Greens blend to get a full 600mg therapeutic dose of NAC.
